In light of Jesus’ vision of discipleship in the Gospels, let’s imagine how he might define a Catholic:
First and foremost, a Catholic has a heart fixed on Jesus Christ as Savior, Lord, and Friend. In other words, a Catholic follows Jesus so closely that Jesus is the first priority, the center of one’s life, because that person has experienced the Risen-Crucified and Glorified Lord who gave His all on the Cross, who continues to give His all in the Eucharist, through His Holy Spirit of love, and by presenting this individual to His Father. Jesus has called this one into a deep, intimate relationship, establishing an eternal bond. But not only that, Jesus has called many others to this same level of relationship, just as He called the original 12 apostles, and has commanded that they be committed to each other to same degree He is to them. This we call the Catholic Church, ideally a communion of love between God and God’s people. And still, it does not end there. Just as Jesus sent out the 12, He sends us at the end of every Mass, to be– through both word and deed–His body in the world, His voice calling all people to Himself and through him back home to the Father. All of this is only possible by the power of the Holy Spirit who is at work in each member of the Church, the Body of Christ. This Spirit is received at baptism and confirmation and in an ongoing way through the surrender of each person in the Church. In God’s compassion, God through Jesus and His Church continues to seek each of us out to save us from sin and selfishness for God’s very Self and God’s never-ending lavish love.
