Cultural Humility: Opening Hearts and Connecting Lives

This series on cultural humility focuses on having a humble and respectful attitude toward others, especially those who are different from us. At its core it is about empathy, avoiding stereotypical thinking, challenging our own cultural biases, reflecting on privilege, racism and living with diversity.

Mr. James L. Knight is Vice President for Equity and Inclusion at St. Edward Catholic High School in Lakewood, author of Heart: A Journey Toward Cultural Humility. He is an educator, coach/mentor, consultant, author, itinerant speaker/teacher, and equity and inclusion strategist.

Mr. Carey Dabney, Professor of Systematic Theology with a specialty in Black Catholic Studies, Walsh University, collaborates with James Knight in workshops on cultural humility.

James Knight’s book on cultural humility is about having a humble and respectful attitude toward others, especially those who are different from us.  At its core it is about empathy, listening and understanding someone else’s perspective; avoiding stereotypical thinking; challenging our own cultural biases. The author provides opportunities for self-reflection as well as group sharing on issues such as privilege, bias, racism, and living with diversity.  This book is being used in the Catholic High Schools of the Cleveland Diocese.
